Electric sofa beds, explained
Understand power sliders, conversion space and the details of powered comfort.
Before ordering a powered sofa, understand its movement, the space it needs and how the controls work on the exact model.
Start with what the mechanism does

These terms are not interchangeable. A large extended seat is not automatically intended for regular overnight use. Ask for a demonstration if the description is unclear.
Plan for the fully open position
Measure the sofa closed and fully extended. Check the distance to tables, fireplaces, walls and other furniture. Leave room to enter and leave the seat without climbing over a mechanism.
Confirm a suitable mains socket and safe cable route. Cables must not be trapped under the sofa or stretched across walkways. Follow the supplied power instructions rather than assuming a battery pack or extension lead is suitable.
Make everyday use straightforward
Try the controls where possible and check whether seats move independently. Confirm how the mechanism returns to its closed position and what to do during a power cut. Ask which operating instructions are supplied.
Keep hands, loose clothing, pets and children clear while the sofa moves. Stop if something is trapped, movement is obstructed or a cable is damaged. Do not force an electric mechanism by hand unless its instructions expressly permit it.
If the sofa will be used for guests
Check usable sleeping width and length, support construction and intended frequency of use. A double-looking sofa bed may not match standard double mattress dimensions. Plan somewhere convenient for bedding.
Ask about assembly, safe moving and the guarantee for frame, mechanism and electrical parts. Keep the specification and instructions.
Can any power slider be used as a bed?
Only if it is designed and described for sleeping. Some sliders and recliners are intended for lounging.
