A compact room does not need to feel like a compromise. Aim for a comfortable seat and clear circulation, with furniture that earns its place.
Map the room before choosing
Draw the room and mark doors, radiators, windows and fitted storage. Include door-opening directions. Measure the usable area rather than treating the whole floor plan as empty.
Mark possible sofa footprints with paper and walk around them while someone else is seated. The doorway and daily movement often determine the best layout.
Compare outside size with usable seating
Slim arms can leave more seating within a given width. Deep seats and generous backs make a sofa project further into the room. Check overall and seat measurements separately.
A compact corner can use one room efficiently; elsewhere a straight sofa and movable footstool work better. Exposed floor beneath a raised design can feel lighter, but comfort and access should lead the decision.

Use light and colour with intention
A connected palette across walls, curtains and larger furniture can make the room calmer. Pale upholstery is one option; a deeper tone can work well with balanced lighting and uncluttered surfaces.
Check a sample in the actual room. The same fabric may look different beside your floor or under evening lamps. Avoid choosing solely because a photograph makes it look bright.
Remember the delivery route
Small rooms often come with narrow halls or stairs. Check the largest packaged section against every turn, lift door and ceiling height. Confirm whether feet or sections can be removed as part of delivery.
Send photographs and measurements if access is uncertain. A room layout cannot establish whether a large section will pass a tight stairwell.
